The ever-reliable character actor is given a rare opportunity to lead in a tough-minded film about a prison warden questioning the morality of death row Alfre Woodard plays Bernardine, a prison warden struggling with the morality of the death sentence, in Clemency. Photograph: NEON T heres little room to breathe in writer-director Chinonye Chukwus constricting, devastating drama Clemency, an intentionally airless film processing a tough subject through an unusual viewpoint. It was the deserved big winner at Sundance this year, making Chukwu the first black woman to win the Grand Jury prize, and now lands at Toronto, with more awards in its sights. Our protagonist is prison warden Bernadine (Alfre Woodard) first seen as she prepares for an execution, methodically going through her mental checklist with calm professionalism while keeping emotions at bay. It might be her 12th but experience only seems to make the process that much harder, a growing awareness that the system shes a part of might not be something she truly believes in. Any back-burner doubt she might have had soon turns into something far less avoidable after she bears witness to a horrifyingly botched lethal injection. Bernadine is sent into an inner tailspin as she confronts her guilt while also prepping for the next execution, this time for an inmate who insists hes innocent. Theres an unbearable specificity to the opening of Clemency not just in the grim minutiae of a state-sanctioned killing but in how we see Bernadine cope with resisting her instinct for humanity. She coldly pats a death row inmates tearful mother on the arm, avoiding a clear need for affection, and despite the impossible circumstances that then play out, she retains a stiff composure as everything around her crumbles. But theres a cost to this repression and we see it in her home life, which feels every bit as claustrophobic as the prison, making us question exactly which of the two provides her with more of an escape. Shes grappling with a slow-burning PTSD of sorts, one that cant be understood by her loving, worried husband, played by The Wires Wendell Pierce, and one that she soaks in alcohol every chance she can get. Theres also an unspoken awareness that Bernadine is a woman working in a male-dominated workplace, one thats tougher than most, and she knows that any shred of visible emotion would be seen by those around her as feminine weakness, a harsher judgement shes also unable to escape. Shes heading towards some sort of self-destruction but Chukwu avoids easy cliche, pacing her film with a patience that echoes reality rather than artifice. I would argue that her only major slip-up would be an unnecessary reliance on some clumsy dream sequences that hammer home Bernadines internal anxieties in a way that feels extraneous. The film around them does enough legwork and they prove distracting rather than affecting. But its a slight misstep in whats otherwise a bleakly effective character study as well as a damning indictment of a barbaric and unjust system. Were accustomed to seeing Woodard impress in the background, whether it be with charm in Heart and Souls or menace in Luke Cage, but rarely do we see her take centre stage, and its this history of quietly impressive scene-stealing that has given her more than enough preparation for carrying a film as difficult as this. Its a nuanced, deeply felt performance that relies less on dialogue and more on the subtleties of movement, whether its in the battle to walk down a prison corridor feigning an assured strength or in how to deal professionally with a potentially innocent death row inmate desperately in need of a human connection. As the latter, Aldis Hodge is also excellent, at times heartbreakingly so, as he edges closer to his execution with the painful awareness that hes leaving little behind. Like Woodard, his dialogue is minimal and the films sparseness might frustrate some who find it all too muted, especially given the subject matter, but theres a quiet yet righteous anger thats impossible to ignore, especially in the crushing finale. Clemencys end credits arrive with relief, not because were unengaged but because, unlike Bernadine, were finally allowed to breathe. Clemency is showing at the Toronto film festival and will be released in the US on 27 December with a UK date yet to be announced.

It is called " Rise of Skywalker" So unless luke or lei didn't recognize their kid from the last 2 movies, she, being Rey i mean, isn't a skywalker. And if she is the whole love interest thing she has going on with her brother/cousin is weird. I think the movie will go as follows. Broad and really stupidly specific strokes at least. Short version below, But first some background. This is basically my half completed script for the movie so this is going to be long. Palpatine secretly survived, took his most faithful and trusted followers with him, hid away and then further built up a secret fleet. But his less trusted he left on their own, knowing that if they survived, theyd become stronger and more fanatical. he knew that if he left them they'd grow strong enough to crush or at the very least weaken whatever government came after his empire. After they either crush the government or at least get close to destroying it, then palps would appear as the "Good Guy" destroying the first order and new republic. Then claiming his rule as legitimate since his rule was wrongfully overthrown to begin with, and the new republic wasn't strong enough to defend itself let alone its people so it had no right to rule. And he'd paint the first order as a fanatical terrorist like cult that also had no claim. Palpatine is manipulative so he'd sell it. From here on out its gets long and specific in certain areas, so if you want the short version jump down a bit. Movie time, the first order conquest is going strong but entire fleets of theirs are going missing. Initially it is presumed that the resistance has some secret super weapon that they are using to undermine the first orders conquest. Kylo doesn't believe they could have produced something of that scale it in secret, but concludes they could have raided something already produced, so he sets out to the ruins of second of the deathstar, since more of its wreckage survived than the first one, to see if the resistance raided its primary weapon components and make a stripped down version. the resistance learns of the first orders trip out to the ruins of the deathstar and assumes kylo is their to scavange superweapon himself to quickly destroy the resistance. They both go to the planet the resistance trying to get to the remains to make sure its thoroughly destroyed and along the way kylo and rey meet, fight/talk. Both accusing each other of what they suspect. And then learn together that theirs someone else out there thats strong enough to defeat the first orders fleet, a "Ghost fleet. Rey, retreating after buying enough time to destroy whatever is left of the superweapon, is left angry at her helplessness to stop kylo and his first order, but intrigued about this "ghost fleet. While kylo grows more unstable and all the more concerned that he has this new threat to deal with on top of struggling to keep general hux and the rest of the first order in line underneath him. Kylo contacts one of his knights of ren who he has had hunting rey demanding an update and wanting to know how he could let her escape, scene ends. Rey then returns to the resistance on that ice world we see, telling them whats she's discovered. They put out feelers into their spy network to see if anything comes up about ghost fleets. Unknowingly though, she is secretly being tracked by the general hux and the first order, who is defying kylos orders and taking matters into his own hands. So they then show up and use that base killer we see in "the last jedi. the mandator 4 super star destroyer or something like that) to again begin to wipe out the resistance base below( and thats what we see in the trailers, not a new super weapon. The resistance begins to escape but not after their spy networks comes back with a name, Jakku. So the surviving resistance members goes to jakku hoping to discover what this ghost fleet is about. After failing to defeat the resistance again hux is contacted by an enraged kylo who demands to know where he is, but before he can explain we see unknown ships coming out of hyperspace and the scene ends. The resistance gathers on jaku and they eventually, after inquiring with the locals with reys help, learns of the old observatory. traveling there finn, poe, rey and crew are attacked by the knight of ren that rey has to quickly deal with. upon getting there they discover some interesting things, including that rey lived there as a child. disturbed and angered by that fact, she begins to angrily search in the observatory, something begins calling to her like before with the lightsaber. She finds a room with a black mirror in it that is reminiscent of the cave back on Ach-To. from there she heres a voice telling her of her potential, and is then shown a dark side vision of herself and told of what she could be. rejecting this she steps back and then the emperor reveals himself to her, or at least, a younger version played by matt smith. He continues to try and tempt her, telling her that with him they can destroy the first order. He shows her hux's destroyed fleet behind him. Then he steps aside and shows her hux, and urges her to reach out with her anger and hatred and kill him. He continues to press until she has had enough, rejects him and smashes the mirror. And in that moment, in a flash of blue lightning, his true form is revealed. It is the emperor. Stunned she watches in horror as the mirror reforms and she watches Palpatine shock hux to death with his lightning whilst cackling. With this knowledge in hand she flees the building and tells the others of what she's found. From the observatory they found several unknown prior hyperspace lanes. They then cross reference the "Ghost ships" sightings with the newly discovered lanes and discover 3 locations that are frequented by this fleet. Finn, poe, and Rey each travel to one of these locations with a small squadron of fighters, and finn is the one to discover this massive fleet. From their they quickly jump away, but not before being detected and several fighters going down, 1 including rose tico. Finn devestated, escapes and then informs the rest of what he found. they meet up and begin to discuss what to do. We cut to kylo, who is barely holding everything together after hux's disappearance, with his knights of ren in a meeting with the other general to discuss tactics. When they get a transmission from an unknown source. Its the emperor. Most of the generals of the first order where once imperials and so are delighted to see him. The emperor says he is most displease by their actions to appose him, but will give them clemency if they turn on kylo and serve him once again. From their the room goes quite. Already divisions are forming, sensing this kylo starts to speak but is quickly interrupted and otherwise undermined by the emperor. The emperor then speaks to his knights of ren, speaking to them of power, how they joined ren to gain power, and asking them if they feel powerful now. He then offers them the same deal he gave the generals with the additional promise that he would give them more power. And then. Chaos. Those in the room go to their feet quickly drawing their weapons, half the knights of ren stick with Kylo and other half turns, people begin falling left and right and kylo barely escapes the ensuing chaos with one loyal knight of ren with him, who betrays him before boarding his tie silencer forcing kylo to kill her. messaging his personal troops the "Sith troopers" and all the other soldiers who are loyal to him to move out to new coordinates. He is then fired upon from the capital ship he is leaving. damaged in the attack but still able to jump to hyperspace he quickly flees. Upon seeing his escape the generals inform Palpatine of their failure. he is, undisturbed. unworried about this false pretender to the throne. He gives them new orders to meet with him and order an attack with their fleet the largest stronghold of the new republic thats he's uncovered. After emerging from hyperspace Kylo attempts to collect himself. and then reaches out through the force, trying to connect to rey. Rey, while discussing what they uncovered feels his presence and moves away to talk to him. After a bit of arguing and learning that kylo is not in control of the first order anymore, and only has a select amount of troops loyal to him now, they agree to fight this new threat together. She convinces the resistance to fight this new threat with kylo urging them that this new threat is greater. They fight, but eventually agree with Finn urging her not to trust him, she agrees saying that she wont, syaing "he's to far gone. they meet up and learn that the new rebulics last stronghold is being over whelmed, after discerning that palpatine might show, if they do as well, they also agree that the new republic cant be allowed to fall ( at least not yet in kylo's eyes) so they travel to its defense. kylo takes his troops to the ground while the Rey and the resistance fights in orbit with kylo's remaining ships. They fight, but are prepared for an assault on whatever ship the emperor is on if it shows. they had prior agreed that if he shows rey would contant kylo and they would assault it together but when he does show. she doesn't call kylo, and instead boards it herself with the rest of her troops. Kylo see's palpatines fleet arrive in orbit and is enraged when he learns rey began the assault without him. He begins to fight his way to a ship having to carve through some of his old knights of ren, finds a suitable vessal and attempts to reach out with the force to find, and board the ship she's on with palpatine. Cutting back to rey, she makes it to his throne room with very little resistance. He is there, on the throne. She demands that he surrenders and he responds with powerfull force lightning. killing all who accompanied her. Left alone with him he begin to talk to her. Explaining her parentage, telling her how its her destiny to become greater than he, and he offers her the throne. Claiming that all of this was for, her. She rejects the throne, denying the powerful evil being or beings that are her parents. Palpatine laughs. Saying to her " you can deny what your are no more then a maggot could call itself a man, its pitiful. have you not seen how powerful events surround you? how you quickly form powerful connections, master things that takes others decades to do? Change the galaxy in the span of 1 short year? You, rey, are a would in the force, you cannot deny what you are any more than i can deny what i am. I am stong yes, but you, you can be power incarnate. you can change this galaxy in ways i never could, you can make this and any other galaxy yours! should you simply reach out, and TAKE IT! I will teach you, all i know and show you how to. and in the end. You will be the STRONGEST. all the wrongs of this galaxy and the next YOU can correct! now take this throne, stand by my side and be the you you were meant to BE. Rey attacks him. angered he shoots her back and begins to tourture her. "You will see in time. Kylo is fighting for his life while trying to find her in this massive fleet. he fights and gets into several close calls before he calls up finn and poe demanding to know where she is. finn and poe offer resistance to him but he eventually convinces them. he finds the emperors flag ship and boards. he is met with heavy resistane and is pitted against his final 3 ex knights of ren. they fight but in the end kylo wins. kylo makes his way to the throne room and finds palpatine on his throne. palpatine could care less, kylo demands to know where rey is but palpatine berates him. demanding to know who HE is to demand anything. he is just some insignificant worm thats torn between light and dark who fancies himself a ruler. Kylo demands to know where rey is one last time, and palpatine smirks and answers, fine, if you wants to know where she is you should as her herself" and jesters behind him. behind him is a dark side rey, sith eyes and all. She has given in to the dark side. from their kylo and her speak, kylor tries to convince her to stay away from palpatine but it is futile, it is too late. They fight and kylo continues to try and convince her but she is dominating him. in the end she gets him on the ground but hesitated in killing him. not likeing that palpatine demands she "Do it. but she continue to hesitate. Power grows within palpatine that kylo can sense. he knows he is going to shock rey, so he darts up and blocks the shock with his saber, but it is to much. it envelopes him and he lies on the ground writhing in agony. upong seeing this rey is snapped out of her anger and hatred, and uses her power to begin to crush palpatine, palpatine fights back but is no match so he turns to offense, be shocks rey with all the strength he has, forcing her to her knees, lighting begins to visable scar her body and her eyes turn sith color again. but she's still forcing palpatine down, eventualy her yells to her calling her foolish and with him she could have had everything. she says to him, that she doesn't want anything, but for him to die. and so he does. Crushed into a heap on the ground lightning stops coming from him. a smoking rey stops and looks over at kylo, he is still alive, barely breathing, but alive. And she senses something in him. The dark he clung too, has lost, he clings to it no more. using the last of the strength she leaves the ship with him in tow, pulled by the force. Upon exiting the ship she reaches out with the force, and destroyes the reactor in the ship, forcing it to overload and destroy itself. she sets a course for the planet below before passing out. The battle there has turned, the first order is in retreat and palpatine's fleet splintered off after his vessel was destroyed. the ships comes to rest on the surface and is raided by finn and poe after having tacked it leaving the emperors ship. upon opening it they see a battered kylo and burnt rey. they draw their weapons on kylo but rey tells them to stop, she herself just barely clinging to consciousness. finn goes to her and begins to give orders to get her in a bacta tank. She tells him not too, its too late. Finn angrily looks over at kylo demanding to know if he did this but she told him no, that he was the one that saved her. Finn insisnts that she get looked at but she again says no. it is too late. Finn and rey have one last touching moment, then rey dies in his arms. Kylo wakes up in a holding cell some time later, the scar rey gave him back on star killer base was blackned and widened by palpatines lighting. he demands to know whats happened to rey. Finn is called and he goes in there and tells him. from their finn goes on to tell kylo whats happened while he was out. The first order without a command structuer quickly fell into chaos. apparently Palpatine had the generals executed as soon as they came aboard his ship, so after he died their was no chain of command left. those who stayed in orbit where destroyed. The troops that where loyal to kylo where on base in a sort of uneasy alliance until he woke. Finn then ask Kylo what happened on the emperors ship. kylo is quite for a moment. then gives a brief summery. after that they ask each other what to do now. We next see kylo on some unnamed planet, that the jedi training academy he burned down was at. he's studing the ruins when finn and poe are their with his asking him what he plans to do next. Kylo said he doesnt know, but whatever happens next. he knows he has the best teachers he could ask for. and standing behind him we see the force ghosts, of yoda, obiwan, luke, Anikin and Rey. in later material we'll learn even more about reys parents perhaps in a series based in the old republic we'll learn about the force beings that are rey's parents who i envision as beings related to "The Ones" that the clone wars show went over. That kylo gave his troops the choice to go with him in banishment or to join the new Republic in weeding out the last remnants of the first order/empire to NEVER allow something like this to happen again. We'll see kylo redeemed and retrained by the best of the best, creating a new jedi order. and the new republic led by Poe and Finn hunting down the last remnants of the first order/empire. edit, also the reason palpatine is doing what he did for rey isn't actually for rey, its so he peer closer into the dark side with her so that he can learn more and become even more powerful, the long term goal is always focused on him. Short version: Palpatine survives, manipulates the first order into betraying Kylo ren, After learning of the extensional threat that is Palpatine and his massive "ghost fleet" the surviving Resistance members and kylo ren with his few loyal troops work together to defend the last stronghold of the New republic thats under atttack by paplatine, his "ghost fleet" and the first order that he's assumed command of. In the final fight above the last stronghold of the republic, Rey meets paplatine in his throne room and he revels to her, her heritage. She is an offspring of a powerful darkside being akin to "The ones. Due to it being an unnatural heritage, that makes her a wound in the force and all that that would entail from legends material. She is tortured and corrupted by palpatine and kylo is forced to try and redeem her, being no match for a dark side version of her. He is unsuccessful in his attempts to save her, until she hesitates in killing him and he does an unselfish act in order to protect her, doing this helped redeem her and allowed her to use her strength to kill paplatine for good. But in doing so paplatine mortally wounded her as well. Kylo is also redeemed at this point, abandoning the dark side. Rey dies in finns arms on the planet below, the first order and the emperor's "ghost fleet" remnants are all destroyed or on the run and soon to be hunted down. kylo is banished with those who choose to follow him, those who did not joined the hunt for the first order and ghost fleet remnants. kylo is then retrained by a force ghost luke, yoda, obiwan, anikin, and rey and resurrects a new jedi order.
